Welcome to Khao I Dang Today

In April 2018, I had the great privilege of visiting the Khao I Dang Learning Center, on the site of Thailand's famed camp, The Khao I Dang Holding Center, which was home to some 160,000 Cambodian refugees from 1979 to 1993 who fled their country after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. Some lived at KID - as it was known back then - for several years. Some, as many as ten years, before they resettled in the U.S., France, or Australia, or returned to Cambodia. The vast majority moved to the U.S.

A few days after my visit, while in Bangkok, I met the woman at the International Committee of the Red Cross who helped put the new Learning Center and its small museum together.

Since the Learning Center opened in mid-2016, some 400 people have visited - nearly all people who once lived there, coming with their families to show them a significant place in their family history.
